Vol. 514 No. 6

Written Answers. - Driving Licences.

Denis Naughten

Question:

227 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of persons on their first, second and third provisional licences. [4929/00]

The information requested is not available in my Department. More detailed statistical information on driver licences will be available when the computerised national driver file currently being developed is completed. However, it is estimated that some 371,000 provisional licences were current as at 31 December 1998. This estimate takes account of the number of driving tests passed in the preceding two years and accordingly adjusts the statistics for provisional licences as set out in table 25 of the Irish Bulletin of Vehicle and Driver Statistics 1998 which embody an element of double counting. The bulletin is available in the Oireachtas Library.
