Question:

231 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of persons who are waiting for driving tests; the average waiting time from the date of first application; the number of tests taken during the past 12 months; the number of testers employed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4996/00]

Some 89,000 applicants are at present waiting for driving tests. Of these, approximately 29,000 have been given test appointments and a further 16,000 have indicated that they are not currently available to be tested. The average waiting period for a test is 26 weeks. In the 12 months to 31 January 2000 some 141,000 tests were conducted. One hundred and one testers are currently employed.
