Vol. 514 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Caretakers.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

297 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to introduce a pension scheme for primary school caretakers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4829/00]

The issue of introducing a pension scheme for primary school caretakers was fully explored in 1985 when a superannuation scheme was being introduced for secretaries in primary schools. However, at that time, the age profile of the caretakers employed under the scheme rendered the proposal impractical.

The age profile of these caretakers would have increased since 1985, and in the circumstances I regret that it would not be possible to introduce a pension scheme for them at this stage.
