Vol. 515 No. 1

Written Answers. - Offshore Accounts.

Dick Spring

Question:

38 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Finance if he has asked the Central Bank when it first became aware of the operation of Ansbacher accounts; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5266/00]

On 31 October 1997, I wrote to the Governor of the Central Bank about the supervisory issues arising from the Tribunal of Inquiry, Dunnes Payments. The Governor replied by letter dated 11 November 1997. I read the Governor's letter into the record of the House on 19 November 1997 – Official Report, Vol. 483, No. 1.

It would not be appropriate for me to make any further statement on matters which are currently the subject of examination by the Moriarty tribunal other than to say that I have been informed by the Central Bank that it expects to be giving evidence to the tribunal shortly.
