Vol. 515 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Donal Carey

Question:

122 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for Finance if he will address the concerns of landowners and the community regarding a recent proposal to solve the flooding problem in the Tarman area of south Galway by draining water into the Castlelodge River and the Tullymacken and Fergus catchment basins in view of the fact £2 million has been spent on a hydroleological survey on the Galway problem and no assessment has been made on the downstream effects in County Clare on the flooded River Fergus. [5709/00]

I have established a steering group to investigate proposals for alleviation flooding problems in the south Galway area. A scheme to relieve flooding problems in the Tarmon area of south Galway is one peripheral project which was identified in the major south Galway flood study final report and has been listed by local interests for further consideration by the steering group. The downstream impacts of any flood relief proposals will have to be thoroughly assessed before any scheme(s) could be advanced for implementation. The concerns of the landowners in the Fergus River catchment have already been expressed to the secretary of the steering group and will be considered by the group.
