Question:

206 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of persons convicted of perpetrating acts of assault and battery against women in each of the past three years. [5671/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the number of persons convicted for indictable assaults on women for the years 1997 and 1998 are as set out below. Statistics for 1999 are not yet available.

I am also informed by Garda authorities that statistics for the number of persons convicted for common assault are not currently available on the basis of the gender of the victims. The information could only be obtained by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources.
