Question:

150 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress, if any, made to date by his Department in preparing legislation on human assisted reproduction; and the substantive provisions the Government proposes to be enacted. [5619/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 150 together.

Assisted human reproduction raises a wide range of very sensitive and complex issues with associated legal, ethical, social and medical implications.

I am pleased to say that the Government has recently approved the establishment of a commission on assisted human reproduction with the following terms of reference "to prepare a report on the possible approaches to the regulation of all aspects of assisted human reproduction and the social, ethical and legal factors to be taken into account in determining public policy in this area."

I am currently considering the composition of the commission and this process will be finalised as quickly as possible.
