Vol. 515 No. 2

Written Answers. - Osteoporosis Service.

Willie Penrose

Question:

33 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has satisfied himself that access to testing for osteoporosis is available for all women who require it; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5509/00]

Osteoporosis is becoming increasingly prevalent in our society, due in part to the ageing of the population. Osteoporosis is an important women's health issue, however, it also occurs in males.

An effective clinical osteoporosis service involves a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals offering the patient a range of skills, including clinical expertise, diagnostic services, advice on nutrition-exercise and coping with osteoporosis at home; and help in regaining mobility and independence following a fracture.

I understand that the diagnosis of osteoporosis is facilitated by bone density measurement which is undertaken by x-ray. The x-ray is normally performed by a CT scanner but may in some instances be facilitated by a dexa scanner.

All patients who require such x-rays are referred by a general practitioner to the appropriate acute facility in the normal manner.
