Question:

143 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will meet a delegation from the Regional Consultants Orthodontic Group to discuss the major difficulties which exist within the orthodontic service and to consider essential action to rectify the position as recommended by this group. [5610/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 68 and 143 together.

The provision of orthodontic services is a matter in the first instance for individual health boards. Any difficulties which the orthodontic consultants are experiencing with the service should be discussed in the first instance with health board management. I am concerned that, despite considerable progress in the provision of orthodontic services through the setting up of regional orthodontic units under the direction and supervision of consultant orthodontists, waiting time for orthodontic treatment in many instances remains unacceptably long.

I am arranging to get the views of health board management on the level of unmet need and how this need can best be met.
