Vol. 515 No. 4

Written Answers. - Remedial Service.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

168 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education and Science the primary schools in County Donegal without the services of a remedial teacher; and if he will appoint these teachers to schools without the service. [6383/00]

All schools in County Donegal with a pupil teacher ratio of 10:1 or above have been allocated a remedial teaching service.

There are five schools in County Donegal which do not currently have a remedial service. Each of these schools has a pupil teacher ratio of less than 10:1. The schools in question are Glentogher Convent NS, Carndonagh, Letterkenny; Creeslough NS, Creeslough; Ballyherrin NS, Letterkenny; Gartan NS, Churchill, Letterkenny and scoil naisiúnta Baile Mór Portnablagh, Letterkenny.

When the remedial service was being extended on a nationwide basis in September, 1999 it was considered that schools with an existing pupil teacher ratio below 10:1 should not warrant an automatic allocation of remedial support. However, any such schools including the schools listed above, may apply to my Department for remedial support where they can demonstrate a need for such a service.
