Vol. 515 No. 4

Written Answers. - Patient Representation.

Bernard Allen

Question:

98 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will appoint a patients' organisation (details supplied) to the Medical Council in order to address the need for a strong patient advocacy in the health services. [6325/00]

Minister for Health and Children (Mr. Martin): The matter of revising the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978, is under active consideration. I hope to be in a position to bring forward proposals this year.
The question of representation on the Medical Council, other than by members of the medical profession, is one of the issues which will be taken into account when the 1978 Act is being revised. At present the Medical Council has 25 members of whom three are not doctors and the need for broader consumer representation is being considered.
