Vol. 515 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Ulick Burke

Question:

111 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Health and Children if all new operating theatres at University College Hospital, Galway, are fully operational; if funding has been provided for these facilities to operate to full capacity; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6395/00]

The provision of services at University College Hospital, Galway is a matter for the Western Health Board in the first instance. A sum of £6.85 million has been provided to the Western Health Board since 1998 to enable the full commissioning of new units, including the new operating theatres, completed under the major phase 1 development at the hospital. I understand from the board that all theatres have now been commissioned but due to a lack of anaesthetic and nursing personnel are not yet being used to full capacity. However, I understand that interviews have taken place and the board are now in the process of making the necessary appointments to enable full utilisation in line with the funding now available.
