Vol. 515 No. 5

Written Answers. - Abattoir Operators.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

57 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the reason he has not introduced grant aid for the updating of small abattoirs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6480/00]

Current EU guidelines on the payment of State aid precludes member states from providing financial assistance to abattoir operators aimed at bringing their premises up to existing minimum hygiene standards. However, under the national development plan, proposals for financial assistance other than meeting mandatory minimum hygiene standards can be considered. It is open to the industry to submit proposals along those lines.
