Vol. 515 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Austin Currie

Question:

101 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will order a report to be prepared on the current and future requirements of the Lucan area, County Dublin, in view of the fact the population is among the fastest growing in the EU and the pressure this increase is putting on primary and post primary school accommodation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6460/00]

School accommodation needs in the Lucan area of Dublin are the subject of periodic review in the planning section of my Department. In this context, approval has already been given for a number of major school extensions at both primary and second level in the area. In recent years, also, a new multi-denominational primary school and an all-Irish community college in the area were given recognition by my Department. I am satisfied that these measures will significantly alleviate pressure for school places in Lucan in the short-term.

In view of the major housing developments in the area, my Department will continue to monitor the need for additional school accommodation at first and second level.

Austin Currie

Question:

102 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science the terms of reference of the examination being carried out into the need for additional accommodation at first and second level schools in Dublin 15; when this examination will be concluded; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6461/00]

The purpose of the examination being carried out by my Department is to determine, as accurately as possible, the requirements of the Dublin 15 area for school accommodation at first and second level in view of the extensive housing development that is taking place in the area at present.

I expect that I will shortly be in a position to decide what immediate need exists for additional school accommodation in the area.
