Vol. 515 No. 6

Written Answers. - Nursing Homes.

Billy Timmins

Question:

183 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to appoint a regulator to supervise private nursing homes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6849/00]

The Health (Nursing Homes) Act, 1990, gives powers to health boards to ensure proper standards in relation to nursing homes. Regulations made under the Act require that there must be adequate and suitable accommodation, food and care for dependent persons while being maintained in nursing homes. The regulations also provide for a system of twice yearly inspections by designated officers of the health board authorised by the chief executive officer. I am satisfied with the current system of inspections and I have no plans to introduce a regulator.
