Question:

196 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of additional consultant's posts approved in each of the years from 1997 to 1999; the dates upon which appointments to each of the posts were made; the hospitals to which these posts were allocated and to which the consultants recruited to date have been appointed; and the number of consultant appointments approved in each of these years in respect of which no appointment has been made or position taken up. Comhairle na nOspidéal is the statutory body with responsibility for regulating the number and type of consultant appointments in hospitals providing services under the Health Act, 1970. Comhairle na nOspidéal is currently extracting and collating the details requested by the Deputy. The information available to date is set out as follows and the remaining data will be forwarded directly to the Deputy as soon as possible.

The number of additional consultant posts in each of the years referred to by the Deputy was as follows: 1997 – 35; 1998 – 61 : 1999 – 53. (Source: Comairle na nOspidéal report "Consulting Staffing – January 2000").
