Vol. 515 No. 6

Written Answers. - Asylum Seekers.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

235 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to introduce a voucher scheme for refugees; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6691/00]

Due to a severe shortage of accommodation in Dublin, asylum seekers are bein settled at various locations around the country. A number of these have been provided with full board accommodation and, consequently, are in receipt of reduced allowances under the supplementary welfare allowances scheme.

While I have no immediate plans to introduce a voucher system for asylum seekers, I am keeping the matter under review in the light of the number of new arrivals and the limited availability of suitable accommodation.
