Vol. 515 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Austin Currie

Question:

247 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will respond to the issues raised in a submission (details supplied) on policing in north Clondalkin; if he will provide resources for the additional manpower; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6703/00]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that concerns were expressed by community representatives to the north Clondalkin community forum. Arising from these concerns, specific policing strategies to address issues of public order and drug dealing in the Clondalkin and Ronanstown areas were drawn up.

The Garda authorities have informed me that these strategies involve local, divisional and national resources and are reviewed periodically to ensure continued effectiveness. The success of these strategies can be measured by the positive attitude taken by local representatives, who acknowledge the work being done by the gardaí and the level of activity by the Ronanstown drugs unit and national specialist units.

In relation to the issue of additional manpower, the Garda Commissioner has informed me that the situation is being reviewed in the context of an overall review of the resource requirements of all Garda districts.
