Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Michael Creed

Question:

255 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the budget available in his Department in the current financial year for the repair and maintenance of Garda property including stations and residences; the number of properties identified as in need of attention in each district of the Bandon Garda Division; and the works which will be carried out in each district in 2000. [6871/00]

A provision of £4,087,000 has been made for the maintenance of Garda premises this year. I am informed by the Garda authorities that a total of ten stations in the Bandon division are currently listed for priority attention. In addition three further stations need refurbishment work and in the case of two of them extensions are also required. The official accommodation at three other stations is in need of refurbishment.

I understand that as part of the ongoing Garda building maintenance programme the following works are due to be completed this year: internal and external painting of Ballyfeard, Dunmanway, Schull, Kanturk and Bandon stations; improvement works to Kanturk; work on the cells at Kinsale and work to the official accommodation at Durrus.

As with all items on the Garda building maintenance programme, however, work must proceed on the basis of overall priorities and the availability of financial and other resources.
