279 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has for the introduction of fortnightly payment of pension for retired national teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6572/00]

The feasibility of introducing fortnightly payment of pension for retired national teachers will be considered in the context of my Department's overall information technology needs.

280 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to provide for the payment of the full month's pension to the spouses of national teachers who die within the month; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6573/00]

The position is that on the death of a pensioned teacher who was a contributing member of the spouses and children's contributory pension scheme, the surviving spouse will be paid a pension, for the first month following death, at the rate equivalent to the deceased's pension.
