Vol. 516 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Minimum Wage.

Nora Owen

Question:

102 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the impact, if any, the payment of the national minimum wage will have on his Department; the number of staff working for his Department or any agency associated with his Department who will need to receive an increased wage as a result of its introduction; the full cost of its introduction in his Department; the sectors and persons and categories of employees who will be receiving it when it is introduced; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7156/00]

Following enactment of the relevant legislation, it is understood that the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment intends to set a national minimum hourly rate of pay at £4.40. I can confirm that there are no staff working in my Department or in any agency associated with it who are currently paid less than £4.40 per hour.

However, the payment of a national minimum wage may have some implications in respect of the allowances provided to persons admitted as trainees for the Garda Siochána. There are currently around 500 trainees who may be affected. However, until the Bill has passed all stages and relevant details finalised, I cannot comment any further.
