Vol. 516 No. 1

Written Answers. - Skill Shortages.

Richard Bruton

Question:

43 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will consider a scheme of assistance to people returning to work here in certain specified areas of skill shortage in view of the high costs of removal and resettlement. [7180/00]

The Government has in place a comprehensive range of strategies and policies aimed at addressing skills constraints. Many of these actions are notified in the employment action plan 1999. For example, taxation reform and child care provision, in addition to enhancing the quality of labour supply, are key elements of supply side measures. I am continuing to keep under review current policies aimed at assisting people from overseas to return to work in Ireland based on the skills needs of the economy.

However, I am not in favour of direct financial assistance to individuals in this area.
