Vol. 516 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cardiac Services.

Seán Haughey

Question:

81 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Health and Children the length of time the angiogram equipment has been out of order in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9; the alternative arrangements, if any, in place for patients needing an angiogram; when this equipment will be repaired or replaced; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7080/00]

I have had inquiries made of Beaumont Hospital authorities regarding this matter and they have advised me that the equipment used to perform angiograms at the hospital was situated in the radiology department, where it was used to perform a wide variety of interventional procedures. This equipment was found to be non-Y2K compliant and was removed from use in December 1999. Following discussions with my Department, funding was provided to replace this equipment. The new replacement equipment is being installed but will not be suitable for the performance of coronary angiograms.

In recognition of the need for dedicated interventional cardiology facilities at Beaumont Hospital, my Department has funded the hospital to purchase dedicated equipment to be sited in an independent facility. The hospital has informed me that work on this facility is currently in progress and that it is scheduled for completion by the middle of 2000.

While this work is in progress, patients at Beaumont Hospital requiring coronary angiograms are having these procedures carried out by Beaumont Hospital staff at the Mater Private Hospital. This arrangement is under constant review by the hospital authorities to ensure patient safety and comfort.
