Vol. 516 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax Allowances.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

257 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider a scheme whereby income from home help will be exempted from tax in order to encourage greater participation in this vital work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9045/00]

From 1 April 2000, all employees of the home help service will be on or above the minimum wage as will many other employees in the State. It would be entirely inappropriate to discriminate in favour of one particular group of workers by exempting their income from tax while deducting tax from other employees on the same income level.
