Vol. 516 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

360 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to a recent newspaper article (details supplied) relating to exhumation of orphans' bodies if the investigation referred to is under way and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8989/00]

As the Deputy is aware it is not the practice of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to comment on individual Garda investigations save in the most exceptional of circumstances.

Furthermore as the Deputy will be aware, the Garda Commissioner is independent in operational matters and Garda investigations are not carried out under the aegis of my Department or any other Department of State.

All I propose to say in this case is that a Garda investigation is currently under way into alleged physical and sexual abuse at Letterfrack industrial school. A team of seven gardaí are working full time on the investigation.
