Vol. 516 No. 6

Written Answers. - Irish Red Cross Society.

Liz McManus

Question:

115 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Defence the training, advice or assistance, if any, provided for those nominated by Government to serve on the central council of the Irish Red Cross; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8807/00]

Derek McDowell

Question:

121 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Defence when he expects to nominate persons to serve on the central council of the Irish Red Cross to replace those whose term of office expires in April 2000; if he has concluded his examination of the possibility of appointing staff representatives to the council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8806/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 115 and 121 together.

The Government in nominating persons to the central council takes into account the overall qualifications of the individuals nominated to this important body.

The Government carefully considers and nominates persons to the Central Council of the Irish Red Cross Society who it deems will make a positive contribution to the affairs of the society. The term of office of Government nominees to the central council of the Irish Red Cross Society expires on 30 April 2000.

Nominations are usually made towards the end of April in a nomination year.
