Question:

170 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the amount paid in compensation claims by her Department in 1999; and the heading under which payments were made. [8894/00]

The total amount paid in compensation claims by my Department in 1999 amounted to £49,286.85, broken down as follows: £9,331.19 in costs was paid in respect of a case taken against the Department regarding the late implementation of the product liability directive total of £39,575 was paid in respect of settlement agreements in relation to grievance proceedings taken by two members of staff.

Finally, three miscellaneous claims in respect of medical and clothing expenses were paid amounting to £380.66.
