Vol. 516 No. 6

Written Answers. - Compensation Claims.

Jim Higgins

Question:

195 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Defence the amount paid in compensation claims by his Department in 1999; and the heading under which payments were made. [8898/00]

In 1999 a total of £35.47 million was paid in settlement of 2,123 hearing loss cases which included £10.2 million in plaintiffs' legal costs. In the same year £3.01 million was spent in settling 139 claims which were not related to hearing loss and of which £0.71 million was in respect of plaintiff's legal costs. I should add that all the legal costs for 1999 have not yet been finalised.
