Vol. 517 No. 1

Written Answers. - Birth Statistics.

Jim Higgins

Question:

48 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Taoiseach the number of babies born in each of the years from 1995 to 1999; the numbers born to married mothers and unmarried mothers in these years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8838/00]

In the period January to September 1999, which is the most recent currently available, there were 40,813 births registered. Of these, 12,651 or 31%, were to unmarried mothers. Statistics for the full year 1999 will be published by the CSO in May.

I propose to circulate a table setting out the corresponding figures for the years 1995 to 1998, inclusive.
