Vol. 517 No. 1

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

113 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she has examined the implications of the proposed EU legislation or directives in respect of rail and road transport; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9331/00]

There are currently a number of proposals for EU directives in respect of rail matters. The main thrust of these proposals is to further liberalise the railway market, improve access to the EU rail network and services and enhance interoperability on the trans-European rail network.

On road transport, there is a proposal for a directive on a transparent system of harmonised rules for driving restrictions on heavy goods vehicles involved in international transport on designated roads. This refers to weekend and night-time bans on heavy goods vehicles which are implemented by some member states.
My Department is involved at EU level in the negotiation of these proposals and monitors on a continuing basis the possible implications for the Irish rail and road transport sectors.
