Vol. 517 No. 3

Written Answers. - Suckler Cow Quota.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

120 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the reason the application for suckler cow quota made by a person (details supplied) in County Kerry was refused; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9606/00]

The person named has applied for an allocation of suckler cow quota from the year 2000 National Reserve under category D. This category is confined to farmers who do not qualify under the priority categories A, B and C.

More than 7,400 farmers applied for reserve quota which is being allocated, inter alia, with reference to each applicant's level of livestock units. Under category D, farmers with no livestock units are allocated quota first, then continuing with those with one livestock unit and so on until all the available quota is distributed. As the amount of quota available for distribution was limited, all the available quota for category D applicants was distributed to those with eight livestock units or less.

As the person named has 41.8 livestock units, there was insufficient quota in the reserve to enable an allocation to be made to him.
