Vol. 517 No. 3

Written Answers. - Meat Quality.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

141 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he has satisfied himself that sufficient controls exist in the meat industry to ensure that only the highest quality products are marketed throughout the world; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9956/00]

The operation of export-approved slaughter, cutting and cold store meat plants is governed by the Abattoirs Act, 1988, (Veterinary Examination) Regulations, 1992, as amended and the European Communities (Fresh Meat) Regulations, 1997. Plants which manufacture meat products are governed by the European Communities (Meat Products and Other Products of Animal Origin) Regulations, 1995, while the production of minced meat and meat preparations is governed by the European Communities (Minced Meat and Meat Preparations) Regulations, 1996.

This legislation provides for the type and extent of control in the various plants and I am satisfied that the measures in place within these plants are being effectively applied. Irish meat is exported to a large number of countries both within the EU and beyond. Our customers in those countries are, on an ongoing basis, satisfied with the quality and safety of our output as is evidenced by our ability to maintain high demand for Irish meat in those markets.
