Vol. 517 No. 3

Written Answers. - Speech Therapy Service.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

207 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children the steps, if any, he will take to ensure that a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 is urgently provided with speech therapy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9791/00]

The provision of speech and language therapy services to school going children with an intellectual disability in the Dublin region is the responsibility of the Eastern Regional Health Authority. I have therefore asked the chief executive officer of the Authority to investigate this matter and reply directly to the Deputy.

Dick Spring

Question:

209 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to appoint five speech therapists to the Southern Health Board. [9811/00]

The provision of speech and language therapy services is a matter for the relevant health board, in this case, the Southern Health Board. The report of the review group on health and personal social services for people with physical and sensory disabilities, Towards an Independent Future, which was published in December 1996 set out the requirements for the development of these services, including the provision of additional therapy services. This year £7 million has been provided for the development of the services of which £1.021 million was allocated to the Southern Health Board to decide, in consultation with the regional co-ordinating committee for physical and sensory disability services, on priorities for allocation of funding for the development of services in its functional area.

A copy of the Deputy's question has been referred to the chief executive officer, Southern Health Board with a request that he examine the query and reply directly to the Deputy, as a matter of urgency.
