Vol. 517 No. 3

Written Answers. - Consultant Appointments.

Bernard Allen

Question:

214 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the steps, if any, he is taking to ensure that consultants have not been struck off in another jurisdiction before taking up locum or full-time work here. [9991/00]

The registration of doctors before they commence practice in Ireland is a matter for the Medical Council. The council maintains close contact with similar bodies in Europe and elsewhere to ensure that doctors who have been removed from registers or otherwise had their practices restricted, do not succeed in getting on to the register in Ireland. Employers have been asked to ensure that all references presented by candidates for consultant posts are thoroughly checked before contracts of employment are offered.
