Vol. 517 No. 3

Written Answers. - Food Industry.

Ivor Callely

Question:

40 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development his Department's policy on the development of the food industry and the current marketing strategy of Bord Bia; the input of the restaurant sector to this strategy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7762/00]

Specific food related initiatives designed to assist the development of the industry are set out in the National Development Plan 2000-2006. The initiatives, which will be implemented through operational programmes currently being prepared, provide for a total public funding allocation of £282 million. Funding will be directed as follows: £120 million for capital investment; £83 million for research, technology and innovation; £48 million for marketing and promotion; and £31 million to address the human resources needs of the food industry.

The £48 million intended for marketing and promotion will facilitate the achievement by An Bord Bia of its overall objective of increasing sales of Irish food and drink. In the context of input from the restaurant sector, An Bord Bia continues to work with restaurateurs and restaurant organisations, both in Ireland and overseas markets. In the current year, for example, the board is working closely with the restaurants, chefs and hotel organisations regarding the launch of Feile Bia 2000. This will be a major opportunity for the catering industry to showcase top quality Irish cuisine and the important part that this sector plays in the food industry.

I am confident that the action outlined in the national development plan provides a cohesive and comprehensive response to the needs of the entire food industry that will assist the industry to meet the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
