Vol. 517 No. 3

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Representation.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

99 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the new statutory minimum wage or a local currency equivalent will be paid to all persons employed by embassies or honorary consuls abroad whether they be Irish citizens or others; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9803/00]

The practice followed by the Department of Foreign Affairs in relation to the local staff it employs in its missions abroad is to provide them with salaries and conditions in accordance with local legal requirements and which are also competitive in terms of the prevailing rate for such forms of employment. Salaries will be set at a level which comply with any local statutory minimum wage requirements where such provisions apply.
