Vol. 517 No. 4

Written Answers. - Light Rail Project.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

152 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Public Enterprise her intentions in respect of the Dundrum Luas line in Dublin 14; and the implications for the timescale for completion of recent suggestions that this line would go underground at Ranelagh in Dublin 6 as a metro-type system. [10131/00]

I granted a light railway order for the Sandyford to St. Stephen's Green line in September 1999. Since then CIE has been continuing with preparations for the construction of the line and preliminary physical works began in January last. Construction of the line is scheduled for completion in early 2003 with services commencing very soon after. The order approved the construction of the line along the old Harcourt Street rail alignment as far as the Grand Canal and on-street from there to St. Stephen's Green. The Dublin Transportation Office will shortly make a presentation to the Cabinet infrastructure committee on the transportation strategy for the period 2000 to 2006, including the further development of the light rail network.
