Vol. 517 No. 4

Written Answers. - General Register Office.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

175 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the ongoing lengthy queues in the General Register Office in Lombard Street, Dublin 2; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that people are being turned away during opening hours in case the number of people in the building exceeds health and safety regulations; the plans, if any, he has to address this long-standing problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10137/00]

I am aware that the queues for services outside Joyce House have been considerable in recent times and I regret the inconvenience to the persons concerned. The administration of the registration system, including the services and facilities provided at Joyce House, is statutorily a matter for An tÁrd-Chláraitheoir of Births, Deaths and Marriages and for the Superintendent Registrar, Dublin who operates under his general direction.

There are two separate offices located at Joyce House, Lombard Street, Dublin 2, the General Register office and the Superintendent Registrar's office on the ground floor, which provides certificates for all births, deaths and Roman Catholic marriages occurring within the Dublin city and county area. I presume that the Deputy is referring to the latter office, which is currently experiencing a very high level of demand for certificates. As this office is the responsibility of the Eastern Regional Health Authority the question has been referred to the authority and An tÁrd-Chláraitheoir has asked the authority to reply directly to the Deputy. I am not aware that people are being turned away from the General Register office during opening hours.
