Vol. 517 No. 4

Written Answers. - Long-term Illness Scheme.

Austin Currie

Question:

179 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Health and Children when a decision will be taken by his Department on the particular medications involved following his decision to include the treatment of hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia in diabetic patients in the long-term illness scheme (details provided); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10141/00]

To ensure uniformity amongst health boards in the operation of the long-term illness scheme in relation to patients with diabetes, the decision was made to include medication for the treatment of hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia in diabetic patients under the scheme. I hope that the operational details to provide the framework for this matter will be finalised in the coming weeks. I should add that medication approved will be drawn from the common list of reimbursable products.
