Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Austin Deasy

Question:

228 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the estimated tonnage of paper and packaging, including newsprint, which is being dumped; and the net cost for its disposal. [10046/00]

The national waste database report for 1998 indicates that 548,000 tonnes of paper from the municipal waste stream was landfilled, including some 300,000 tonnes of packaging waste. No information is provided in the report regarding the newsprint component of the municipal waste stream, or the paper component of the industrial waste stream. No information is available regarding the cost of disposal of such waste.
