Vol. 517 No. 4

Written Answers. - Accident and Emergency Services.

Michael Bell

Question:

119 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to concerns expressed by the Accident and Emergency Consultants Association (details supplied) that a catastrophic implosion was looming in the health service this summer due to the fact a severe shortage of junior doctors threatens to close some casualty departments; the steps, if any, he is taking to avert such a catastrophe; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9904/00]

I have seen some of the reports referred to by the Deputy. I am satisfied that many of these reports are alarmist. There is no reason to believe that any accident and emergency department will have to close. I have discussed the matter with the Medical Council and asked it to liaise with my Department on this and related issues.
