Vol. 517 No. 4

Written Answers. - Child Care Services.

Jack Wall

Question:

125 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children the steps, if any, he is taking to address the chronic information deficit in the health services, particularly as it relates to children; if he has satisfied himself that the current budgetary process is adequate to meet areas of need given the absence of up-to-date information on health services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9936/00]

Statistical information on child care services for 1998 will be available on a provisional basis shortly. Figures for 1999 are being sought from the health boards, and are expected to be available soon.

My Department has identified the need to improve the level of information available in the child care services area. In line with the health strategy and the strategic management initiative the Department will shortly be undertaking a major review of the child care information systems, with a view to the development of a child care management information system. A project team will be established and, with the aid of consultants, will draw up the requirements and specifications for the new system.

I am satisfied that the service planning process under which health boards identify their proposals for the provision of services on an annual basis allows for areas of need to be identified.
