The Garda authorities who are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources have informed me that the number of personnel serving in the Garda Síochána at 31 December in each of the years from 1980 to 1990 is as follows:

I am also advised that the figures for the period 1980-88 include probationer gardaí who became members of the force on their first day of recruitment. This situation changed from 1989 onwards when new recruits were no longer attested until a later stage of their training.
