Vol. 517 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Enda Kenny

Question:

157 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position of Ballinrobe on the priority list for a new Garda station; if this has changed since the last parliamentary question on the matter; if he will authorise plans to be drawn up by competent private architects in view of the fact that there is no site difficulty or objection and his own architectural sources are unable to deal with it until all others before it have been finalised; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10281/00]

My reply to the Deputy on 16 November 1999 fully set out how the priority list for the building and major refurbishment of Garda stations is compiled, and the consultation that is undertaken before agreement on the list is recorded.

Moreover, I explained how works to some stations can be undertaken out of sequence for the reasons stated. In that connection, Ballinrobe's position on the list has not changed significantly since that reply. There are 12/13 Garda stations with a higher priority that have yet to be addressed.

As to the matters raised in the remainder of the Deputy's question, such matters are the responsibility of the Office of Public Works. I understand from that office that the building of a new Garda station in Ballinrobe will be progressed as far as is feasible in accordance with the agreed priority list, and to a timeframe determined by overall Garda building priorities and the availability of resources.
