The following table sets out details of the 33 relevant local authorities which have to date adopted Traveller accommodation programmes. For the purposes of the 1998 Act, there are 41 relevant housing authorities required to adopt programmes. However, in accordance with the legislation, four authorities are implementing a joint programme with another authority, leaving 37 local Traveller accommodation programmes to be adopted.
In accordance with section 7(4) of the Act, the date for adoption of the accommodation programmes by the elected members of a local authority was 31 March 2000. Local authorities which have not adopted their programmes by this date may adjourn meetings, at which the motion for adoption is being considered, for a further 21 days in accordance with section 13 of the Act. Where a programme is not adopted within this period, then the manager, under section 14 of the Act, is required to do so by order within a period of one month of the date concerned.
