Vol. 517 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Polls.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

33 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the constituencies in which it is planned to conduct electronic voting in the next general election; if it is intended to use electronic voting in some constituencies only; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10062/00]

The Government has agreed in principle to the introduction of electronic voting and counting. The next phase in the development of this project will be the invitation of tenders for the necessary hardware and software followed by exhaustive testing. When testing establishes that electronic voting and counting operates satisfactorily, the Government will consider using the equipment in a number of constituencies at the next general election. No decision has been taken at this stage on the constituencies in which electronic voting and counting will take place.
