Question:

193 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the progress since 1 March 2000 in respect of finalisation of details for the provision of the new Garda station at Leixlip, County Kildare; if developments have taken place to expedite or hinder the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11294/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 191 and 193 together.

As the Deputy is aware, Kildare County Council agreed that a Garda station could be provided on the council's site at Confey, Leixlip, as part of a proposed development that would also contain a library and a community centre. The plots that the council has assigned to the Garda station and community centre each contain part of Newtown House. This building would have to be demolished if these elements of the development are to be erected on the areas assigned. The council granted planning permission for the new community centre project, including the demolition of Newtown House. However, this is now the subject of an appeal to An Bórd Pleanála. The feasibility of providing a Garda station on the Confey site will depend upon the outcome of this appeal.

The Commissioners of Public Works have recently been offered another site in Leixlip. The suitability of this site for a Garda station is currently being examined.

Progress with the library and youth facilities projects is a matter for the local authority.
