Question:

280 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of persons residing in emergency bed and breakfast accommodation in the Eastern Health Board area; and the relevant figure in each of the years 1998 and 1999. [10779/00]

At the end of January 2000 there were approximately 3,550 persons residing in emergency bed and breakfast accommodation in the Eastern Regional Authority area – formerly the Eastern Health Board area – of whom 2,600 were asylum seekers and 950 were indigenous homeless persons. For the same period for the years 1998 and 1999 there were approximately 1,650 and 1,630 asylum seekers respectively in emergency bed and breakfast accommodation. The figures for indigenous homeless persons for the years 1998 and 1999 are not available.
