Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Michael Ring

Question:

332 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be given permission to knock the ruins of a castle on his lands to make if safe in view of the fact that he has contacted authorities on several occasions seeking assistance. [10455/00]

The property referred to by the Deputy is protected under section 12 of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act, 1994, and is also the subject of a preservation order. Given the circumstances I have outlined the Deputy will appreciate that I am not in a position to approve its demolition.

In relation to safety I understand that officials from my Department met in recent times with the owner of the property and recommended that the he fence the site off to prevent public access.
