Vol. 517 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

Enda Kenny

Question:

347 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the position regarding the development of the historic site at Rath Cruachain, County Roscommon; the access, leased rights or ownership of any ground there by the State; and the proposals, if any, to excavate or carry out archaeological excavations there. [10974/00]

There are a total of eight monuments, or groups of monuments, in the Rathcroghan area in State ownership or guardianship. The role of Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, in relation to Rath Cruachain has been to endeavour to improve access to these monuments. This is being progressed in consultation with local landowners and Roscommon County Council. There are no proposals in the short-term to have an archaeological excavation at Ratncroghan.
